Lowestoft marks Holocaust Memorial Day
This year Holocaust Memorial Day was marked by a special service of remembrance led by a local rabbi and the laying of wreaths outside the Parcel Office, Lowestoft Railway Station. It was here in 1938 that people from the town came to welcome Jewish children fleeing persecution in Vienna on the Kindertransport train.
A new information board has also been erected that details the role that our Town played in the Kindertransport initiative as well as how it was reported by the Lowestoft Journal at the time (including their reaction to kippers for their first breakfast in England!)
This has been researched and written up by Town Councillor Andy Pearce (from our own Harbour and Normaston ward) using historic records from the time and actual accounts of those involved.
